2021 Judging Criteria:
Student teams must have paid the $200 registration fee and completed their student participation form for their case solution to be judged as part of the challenge. Teams may apply to more than 1 case.
Student teams are allowed the assistance of 1-2 faculty members from their participating institution to guide and streamline proposals.
Each student team will have a maximum of 7 minutes to present no more than 7 slides in a pre-recorded video format.

Finalist Judging Panel:
- Doug Juanarena – Serial entrepreneur responsible for developing and commercializing a variety of technologies and companies over his career. Mr. Juanarena was employed by the NASA Langley Research Center in the field of sensor and instrumentation development before leaving to form Pressure Systems Incorporated. During his career, he has been CEO & Founder of three technology startups. Since 2000, he has been an angel investor and mentor to several technology startups helping founders to raise growth capital and to consummate strategic partnerships and exits.
- Erin Burcham - Erin has earned a master’s degree in leadership studies with a focus on economic development. She currently serves as the executive director of the Roanoke-Blacksburg Technology Council, a member driven association that works to promote growth of the Roanoke-Blacksburg technology community. Prior to this role, she was the Roanoke Regional Partnership’s director of talent solutions. She also serves on the Radford University Presidential Task Force for Experiential Learning and is an adviser for the Virginia Tech Foundation GO Virginia Biotech Innovation infrastructure project.
- Bob Fielder – Bob is also a serial entrepreneur, focused on high-tech startups, technology transition, commercialization, and business development. Bob founded TechOpp Consulting, Inc. in 2009 to provide highly pro-active business development and technology transition support to small and mid-size companies. His company provides a special emphasis on government-funded R&D contracts and acquisitions.
